Best Gluten-Free Restaurants in Los Angeles

Ocean & Earth*

In Yorba Linda you’ll find the farm-to-table organic restaurant Ocean & Earth. It’s a great spot to indulge in gluten-free food as you can safely eat anything on the menu worry-free because they have a dedicated gluten-free kitchen. Not to mention, you will be spoiled for choice as the menu is extensive and everything will look scrumptious. The menu doesn’t focus on one type of cuisine in particular, but it does boast an array of American dishes like burgers, nachos, and flatbreads as well as seafood dishes like ceviche, lobster mac & cheese, and shrimp tempura. Regardless of what you choose, you can expect everything to be fresh, organic, beautifully presented, and delicious. The only negative thing is that the service can be slow even when it’s not busy, so don’t come here starving. Nonetheless, Ocean & Earth is definitely worth the visit during your gluten-free trip to LA.

Shojin is not only one of the best gluten-free restaurants in Los Angeles for vegan Japanese food, but also for those with multiple allergies. Everything on their long menu is free of gluten and nuts, and everything is completely vegan. They also list options that are free of onions, garlic, soy, and even sesame seeds. They’ve thought of almost everyone! As for the menu, clearly you’ll have plenty of fresh and delicious sushi roll options, but if you want something different, go for the beet tartare, gyoza, or any of the ramen dishes. After all, it’s not often a celiac gets to enjoy ramen at a restaurant. Oh, and since you’ll be at a Japanese restaurant, you can’t leave without having sake, and boy do they have excellent sake! With locations in Little Tokyo and Culver City, you’ll never be too far from your sushi fix!

Stuff’d Dumpling Shop* (CLOSED)

The chance of eating gluten-free dumplings at a restaurant is almost always slim for a celiac, so when I heard there was a 100% gluten-free restaurant in LA that sold only dumplings I practically ran to Melrose Avenue in Hollywood. Though the menu and portions are small, I thoroughly enjoyed the Siberian Classic and the Hot Chick dumpling bowls. Everything was satisfying and on point! They’ve really perfected the gluten-free dumpling. The dumplings aren’t too doughy or dense, they’re perfect and the fillings are very flavorful! You wouldn’t even know they are gluten-free! Also, if they have it, save room for the dumpling dessert because you’ll be in for a unique experience. What are you waiting for? Go get stuff’d already!

Powerplant SuperFood Café*

If you are looking for a great gluten-free spot for an energizing breakfast in West Hollywood, Powerplant SuperFood Café is where you need to go. However, I must warn my die hard carnivores out there, the menu is predominantly vegan and plant-based, but don’t let that deter you. The impressively large menu has plenty of options you can still drool over, like the maple syrup French toast, the biscuit and gravy plate, and the smoked salmon spread! This dedicated gluten-free kitchen doesn’t focus on just breakfast, but also on superfood smoothies such as the banana black magic that comes with superfoods like hemp, cacao, almond, and maca. Fair warning though, it is a bit pricey and service can be slow, so don’t come here if you’re in a rush or starving.

Honey Hi*

Echo Park’s gluten-free restaurant Honey Hi is a welcome addition to our list of the best gluten-free restaurants in Los Angeles. As a dedicated gluten-free establishment, the options are endless and tasteful. The menu is filled with craveable comfort food, but I would recommend having either the sweet potato hash breakfast bowl or the hazelnut pancakes. The smoothies and beef bone broth drink are worth having too.

Sweetfin Poke*

Sushi lover? Then you’ll love Sweetfin Poke. The popular fish bowl chain in Santa Monica takes all the familiar flavors and components of sushi and puts them in a beautifully assembled bowl, and it tastes amazing. You can enjoy one of their signature bowls from the menu or build your own. You’ll start with a base like rice or kelp noodles which is then topped with your choice of raw fish (or a veggie option), add-ons like wasabi peas, and one of their signature sauces. The best part besides the fresh fish or crispy onions is that everything is gluten-free, just the way my gut loves it! The menu also has many dairy-free and vegan options. Sweetfin Poke has another location in Venice Beach and six other locations scattered around Los Angeles.

Rice Manhattan Beach*

Tucked away on a little side street in Manhattan Beach you’ll find Rice, the best gluten-free restaurant in Los Angeles for a proper Japanese food fix! From tempura and sashimi to ramen and sushi rolls, everything is gluten-free! It’s a celiac’s dream come true. The menu is extensive and has an array of options that are fish and meat based. If you are a vegan or vegetarian there are plenty of options for you too. I personally fell in love with the ramen dishes and sushi rolls and often never stray, but the menu is easily a close-your-eyes-and-pick-and-you’ll-love-what-you-choose type menu, and I’m sure you won’t regret a visit to Rice.

The farm-to-box menu focuses on dishes that taste great but don’t compromise your health, just real food that’s always fresh and made from scratch! The customizable rice and noodle boxes are all topped with locally sourced proteins, vegetables, and one of their signature sauces. Favorites include “The Miss Jones”, which comes with chilled noodles and lemongrass pork, and the Vietnamese staple Pho soup, but you can always go wild and make your own bowl. Bulletproof Coffee Cafe*

Bulletproof coffee is all the rage now. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s a high performance drink that includes ghee, coffee, and brain octane oil, and is said to be better than regular coffee, both in taste and energy level! If you enjoy Bulletproof coffee there is a spot in Santa Monica where you can get yours and other high performing drinks and meals. If you don’t want coffee, you can still enjoy their other non-coffee drinks like berry avocado, hot cocoa, and berry avocado! The cafe is also a nice place for a healthy gluten-free brunch. The 100% gluten-free menu has dishes like breakfast burritos, bone broth soup, buddha bowls, and even tacos. With all the healthy energy you’ll get from eating and drinking at Bulletproof Coffee Cafe, you’ll be more than ready for a long day of exploring the Santa Monica area!

Alza Ethopian Vegan*

If you are strolling through Mercado La Paloma or in the area and find yourself hungry, head to the Mercado La Paloma food court for an Ethiopian delight. The family-run Alza  serves inexpensive homestyle Ethiopian food that’s 100% gluten-free, vegan, and healthy. They even have gluten-free injera (Ethiopian flatbread), which means you can partake in the Ethiopian traditions of scooping up your wot (Ethiopian stew) with injera. If you don’t want or like the flatbread, you can opt for brown rice instead. The menu is pretty easy to navigate, you can choose between one and four of the six wots to enjoy with brown rice or injera. I recommend getting half of an item so you really get to taste eight rather than four.  Also, the drinks go well with the meals. I enjoy the sorrel and chai, but the lemonade and kombucha are equally as good. If you want a unique gluten-free meal in LA, don’t miss Alza.

Suncafe Organic

If you are in search of a great spot to have a gluten-free brunch near Universal Studios, I have to recommend Suncafe Organic. The plant-based restaurant serves homey comfort food that also happens to be organic, dairy-free, and mostly gluten-free, which means there’s plenty to choose from. For breakfast or brunch, go for the Belgian waffles, faux lox bagel, or the All American Skillet which comes with grilled potatoes, pico de gallo, tofu eggs, and homemade cheese. Not in the mood for breakfast food? Then I recommend getting the black garlic gluten-free pizza, nachos, or mac & cheese. They are top-notch, and you won’t even miss the meat! For dessert, save room for the cookie dough cheesecake, it’s out of this world. As for safety, you’ll find the servers and staff to be attentive and knowledgeable as they know how to cater to celiacs and provide safe gluten-free food!

Hugo’s Restaurant

Hugo’s is a great gluten-free friendly spot in Los Angeles. Almost everything can be made gluten-free as bread can be swapped for gluten-free bread and pasta can also be swapped for gluten-free pasta. Just make sure to mention you want your meal to be gluten-free and that you are a celiac. The menu is very clearly marked with gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options and the staff is very friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable about cross-contamination. As for the food, the all-day breakfast menu has favorites you’ll love like French toast, pancakes, and huevos ranchero while the dinner menu has everything from pasta carbonara and mac and cheese to chicken masala and shepherd’s pie. I can guarantee you won’t be hungry after a visit to Hugo’s.

True Food Kitchen

True Food Kitchen’s anti-inflammatory-focused menu and ability to cater to celiacs landed it a spot on our list of the best gluten-free restaurants in LA. Be it the starters, bowls, entrees, or desserts, there are always plenty of safe gluten-free options to choose from. Just make sure to let the waiter know you are a celiac so the cooks can take the precautions needed to prepare your food. The seasonal menu that celebrates real food ingredients and the idea that food should make you feel better, not worse has delicious options to choose from. If the dashi ramen or the Moroccan chicken are on the menu when you’re there, get them, they are excellent choices! I also like the tacos. True Food Kitchen has several other locations around the country in cities like Chicago and San Diego.

Hugo’s Tacos

Not far from the famous Hollywood sign you’ll find one of the best gluten-free friendly restaurants in LA for Mexican awesomeness. The staff are trained to avoid cross-contamination and the properly-labeled menu is filled with many gluten-free options, with some being naturally gluten-free while others can be prepared gluten-free. I am talking about tacos, guac, nachos, and taquitos! The fryers are dedicated gluten-free, which means you can have all the fried goodies you want. This means gluten-free churros and fries!!! Don’t you dare go there without ordering some churros, they’re a must!

Rosa Mexicano Restaurant (CLOSED)

In the heart of LA Live in Downtown Los Angeles is the upscale Mexican restaurant Rosa Mexicano. They specialize in true flavors from different regions of Mexico. Here you shouldn’t expect a typical Tex Mex experience, but rather a more posh and stylish dining experience with all the Mexican favorites like enchiladas, tortilla chips, tacos, and guac! The menu is clearly labeled with plenty of tasteful gluten-free options, making it hard to decide what to get. I recommend starting with their award-winning guacamole, which is made table-side, their signature frozen pomegranate margaritas, and the braised beef enchilada or the grilled steak marinated in tequila for an entree. They’re my top choices. Though pricier than your average Mexican joint, the portions are large and the dishes are flavorful. It’s worth the visit at least once while in LA. Rosa Mexicano has other locations in New York City, Boston, San Francisco, Florida, and Washington DC.

One of the best taco places in LA also happens to be gluten-free, delicious, and cheap! Aside from the teriyaki camarones (shrimp) and the occasional special, everything on the menu is gluten-free! The tacos are perfect, the handmade corn tortillas are always fresh, and the guisados (stew) fillings are scrumptious with just the right kick. Unlike other taco shops which usually have three or four taco options to choose from, Guisados has over ten, so mixing it up and trying something new every time you’re there is a piece of cake. Even with the variety, I find that I almost always go for the frijoles con queso, mole poblano, or cochinita pibil as they always hit the spot! As for the drinks, a nice cold horchata or a Jamaican iced tea always pairs well with any of my tacos. Since Guisados has five locations in Los Angeles, you’ll always be in reach of great gluten-free tacos while exploring LA.

Rising Hearts Bakery*

Rising Hearts is a dedicated gluten-free bakery in Culver City that specializes in gluten-free, vegan, and kosher baked goods. You can find and enjoy everything from savory items to sweet treats like cupcakes and whoopie pies. Though I am not a fan of their cupcakes, I do enjoy their cookie sandwiches and assorted cakes. Their breads and bagels are also great, so whenever I am there I usually grab a bag of cinnamon raisin and jalapeño cheddar bagels to take home.

Kirari West*

If you find yourself in Redondo Beach during your trip to LA, make it a point to stop at Kirari West. It is by far one of the best gluten-free bakeries in Los Angeles County. The family-owned artisanal Japanese bakery specializes in unbelievably good gluten-free baked goodies. It must be the rice flour they use. Since everything is gluten-free and tasty, it will be pretty hard to decide what to eat. I say go for everything, as it’s all sinfully good. However, if everything is not an option, I highly recommend going for the almond brioche for your sweet fix and the French toast or one of the breakfast sandwiches for brunch. Their bread is perfect and should not be missed.

Twice Baked Gluten-Free Bakery is a celiac’s version of cloud nine. One thing is for certain, Twice Baked will not disappoint!

Almost everything is gluten-free at Cocobella Creamery, with the exception of sugar cones, which are stored separately! As for the ice cream, you can indulge in all the classic flavors like cookies n’ cream, mint chip, and cookie dough, or you can go for one of the unique flavors like blueberry cheesecake or unicorn magic all scooped on top of a homemade gluten-free waffle cone.

After my first gluten-free trip to Rome I developed an unhealthy addiction to gelato, so obviously I have to recommend Grom as one of the best gluten-free gelato shops in Los Angeles! This gluten-free certified Italian gelato chain knows how to make celiacs happy. The knowledgeable staff knows to change their gloves and spoons, and to take ice cream from another container when you mention you are a celiac. Everything is gluten-free, with the exception of the cones. That means the sorbets, gelatos, and milkshakes are all yours. My go to flavors are the crema di grom, hazelnut, and tiramisu, but to be truthful, all of their flavors are great. Your sweet tooth will definitely be satisfied after a visit to Grom.
